Recent squash scoring changes

From 1st of April 2009, the principal scoring method for all SQUASH will change from the traditional scoring system to a "PAR to 11" system

What does this mean?

Under today's rules a match is the best of 5 games.  Each game is played to 9 points, unless the score reaches 8 all.  At 8 all the receiver (non server) has to choose to play either to 9 points (known as set 1) or to 10 points (known as set 2).  There is no requirement that a player needs to be two points ahead to win a game.  Points are scored only by the server.  When the server wins a rally he or she scores a point, when the receiver wins a rally he or she becomes the server.

Under PAR (point a rally) scoring a match will still be best of 5 games.  Each game is played to 11 points (with a point either being won or lost on each rally) unless the score reaches 10 all, in which case a player must now win by 2 clear points, e.g. 12-10, 13-11 etc.  In  each rally a point is scored regardless of which player is serving.

In doubles squash, point a rally scoring to 11 points will also be adopted.  If the score reaches 10 all, the next rally is “sudden death”, whichever team wins the rally wins the game 11-10.  Amateur doubles will be best of 5 games, professional doubles will be best of 3.
